How to improve vocabulary for PTE?

Vocabulary is one of the most bothering issues with non-native speakers. In English tests like IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, and even GRE, vocabulary has its own importance, and if a test-taker misses this opportunity, they would be rewarded with less score especially in Writing modules. What is PTE vocabulary? 

PTE vocabulary is simply a collection of words that are complex and used in reputed columns of newspapers, academic articles/thesis, or books. Non-native speakers have limited English words to use, and those words are pretty common. The evaluation in PTE and IELTS has 'vocabulary' as one of the factors based on which the points or bands are given. 

Example of enhanced vocabulary

It is easy to make a normal-looking sentence better by using complex or 'less-frequently used' words. Here is a simple example:

• Skydiving is a perfect example of courage and daring - normal sentence
• Skydiving is a quintessence of courage and daring - better vocabulary

Another:

• Printed books will soon be replaced by eBooks -normal sentence
• Printed books will soon be supplanted by eBooks - enhanced vocabulary

The words 'quintessence' and 'supplanted' will definitely get a better score in vocabulary because of their complexity. However, you should take care of using complex words. If they are too complex or archaic, you may end up in confusing yourself and also the examiner or algorithm.

• It was bruited then that the earth would get destroyed - archaic use
• It was rumored then that the earth would get destroyed - normal and preferred sentence

In above examples, the word 'bruit' is archaic, means no longer used. In writing, such words may have a negative impact, and even if they don't, why take the risk? 

PTE vocabulary improvement or enhancement tips

There are hundreds of websites that mention the 'list' of vocabulary in English. You may choose any one of them. Or, you can simply open a dozen pages and select the words that you are confident in using. 

Precautions must be taken while using the complex words - you should confirm that how those words are used in sentences. Look up any standard dictionary for the word, and carefully study the example. Try to memorize the example and use the word in your essay writing accordingly. 

Following these simple tips on how to improve vocabulary for PTE or IELTS writing will get you a better score in vocabulary, and thus, your overall score or bands will improve.
